Latvian Book Fair Starts Friday!

Bringing together authors, translators, publishers, game manufacturers and readers of different age groups, Kipsala International Exhibition Centre transforms into an inspiring world of literature this weekend, 28 February – 1 March. Here are some key facts about the Latvian Book Fair 2020!

The opening of Latvian Book Fair 2020
takes place at the Grand Stage, Hall I of Kipsala International Exhibition Centre on Friday, 28 February at 13.00. Welcome speeches will be delivered by:
Nauris Puntulis, the Minister for Culture,
Renāte Punka, a chairperson of the board of the Latvian Publishers’ Association,
Viesturs Tīle, a chairman of the board of the International Exhibition Company BT 1,
Sanita Blomniece, a project manager of Latvian Book Fair.

This is the 23rd consecutive edition of Latvian Book Fair held at Kipsala International Exhibition Centre.

Latvian Book Fair 2020 is attended by 102 companies from 8 countries – Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Russia, Turkey, France and Ukraine.

Publishing news will be presented by 46 publishers of Latvia.

The book fair features the National Stand of Ukraine “Ukrainian Book” and the Belarus National Stand “BELKNIGA” for the second consecutive year.

There are five event spots: the Grand Stage, the Fun Reading Room, workshops, the Book Exchange Point and the Writers’ Lounge presented by JELGAVAS TIPOGRĀFIJA.

The three-day programme lists 100 events and opening events of more than 50 new books.

Latvian Book Fair 2020 offers an exhibition of the top 40 best books nominated in 8 categories for the National Zelta ābele (Golden Apple-Tree) Book Art Competition and the Baltic Book Art Competition.

Latvian Book Fair 2020 invites to meet at least 130 authors, including 16 foreign writers.

The international conference “The Book and... the Creator, the Keeper, the Reader” takes place on 28 February. offers nine workshops on subjects topical for employers, educators and parents.

At least 25 participants are going to invite children and parents to play board games, to join in masterclasses, competitions, creative and educational activities.

Young readers are welcome to watch the play “Tuntuļu Jurītis” kindly offered by Latvia Puppet Theatre in the Fun Reading Room on 1 March.

The contribution of Central Library of Riga to the Book Exchange Point this year is 4876 books, including 2612 fiction books, 1663 children and young adult books, the rest – specialised literature in different sectors.
